It was 11 below zero this morning on top of Rich Mountain above Boone. At 4800 feet elevation you can see the skyline of Winston-Salem in the right conditions. It’s an austere beauty in such uncharacteristically cold temperatures. Yet the cold clear mountain dawn was magnificent and another unexpected reward for living in the North Carolina high country.
