Rhododendron in Bloom in Boone, NC

Flowers Burst in Boone, NC

Don’t you just love the sight of flowers blooming in the spring!  Here we are on June 2nd and we’re about to enter full-fledged summer in the high country but I’m wondering if the thermometer is going to crest 70 today!  It’s like that many days in the summer around Boone and Blowing Rock.  You wake up and the sky is half scudding low cumulus clouds and half brilliant sunshine and there’s almost always a cool breeze floating by.  This is life in the summer in the high country.  Having lived here since 1994 when our kids were little, I’ve come to expect that from the third week of May each year you can put your shorts and short sleeve shirts on and leave them on until October.  That’s a beautiful way to live in summer – almost never sweating and always cooled by a fragrant mountain breeze.  Moving here from the concrete jungle of Chicago almost twenty years has given me a deep appreciation for the verdant natural beauty of the North Carolina mountains.  I love the exotic rainforest ecosystem and how the moist atmosphere boils up the most amazing cloud formations and how the sky develops such personality but never quite loses the brilliant Carolina sunshine.  Because of the updraft cooling as the hot moist air climbs the foothills from the Piedmont, we get a lot of afternoon thundershowers in summertime.  But then the sun breaks back out and we have brilliant sunshine unlike the ubiquitous gray skies of Chicago or the constant drizzle of Seattle. In Boone you get just enough mixture of rain and bright sunshine to keep things interesting.  It’s an invigorating climate and one sure to remind that you’re alive and grateful to have arrived at paradise early!
