There are nine schools that make up the Watauga County School system. Bethel Elementary, Blowing Rock Elementary, Cove Creek Elementary, Green Valley Elementary, Hardin Park Elementary, Mabel Elementary, Parkway Elementary, Valle Crucis Elementary, and Watauga High School. The average student teacher ratio is 13.2. There are approximately 340 teachers and 4502 students in the Watauga County School District. Bethel Elementary has the smallest attendance of students with 159 and Hardin Park Elementary has the largest attendance with 736 students.
The Watauga County School system ranks 3rd out of 115 school systems in the percentage of Board Certified faculty (which is the highest professional credential available to teachers). Our school system is continuing to improve each year. Each year all of the grades are assessed using a proficiency target scale and for the 2010-2011 grades 3-8 increased from approximately 43% to 71% in reading and from 77% to 88% in mathematics. The NC Department of Public Instruction has recognized the Watauga County School Systems for having achieved one of the ten highest graduation rates among all North Carolina school systems in 2010-11. Watauga High school recently had a record high graduation rate of 87.4% for 2011 and was the seventh best among the remaining 115 public school systems in North Carolina.
