Watauga County Parks and Rec
The public can enjoy the following facilities provided by Watauga County Parks and Recreation which are located throughout Watauga County: a gym, a community clubhouse, 26 multi-purpose athletic fields, 3 parks, 13 tennis courts, 6 outdoor basketball courts, 8 picnic shelters, an outdoor and an indoor pool.
Grandfather Mountain is the tallest mountain in the Blue Ridge Parkway and is a perfect destination to explore the region’s wildlife or cross the Mile High Swinging Bridge that has been in place since 1952.
Rock Climbing | Bouldering
Boone has been named one of the top 10 climbing and bouldering towns by Rock & Ice Magazine. Triple Crown, the country’s biggest bouldering competitions is held every October in the High country. Canoeing | Kayaking
Canoeing or Kayaking on the New River is an activity for all skill levels. Guided trips are perfect for an afternoon family adventure. If you prefer something a bit more low key, there are several places to rent tubes from along the New River. For the more adventuresome, enjoy whitewater rafting provided by many of the area outfitters that plan daytrips on several different rivers.

The three main ski resorts in Watauga County are Appalachian Ski Mountain, Beech Mountain Resort, and Sugar Mountain Resort. Boone area snowmaking is only getting better therefore the ski seasons keep getting longer. The ski resorts are typically open between November and March, sometimes even April.
If you are a tennis lover there are many options to choose from. The local clubs such as the Inn at Yonahlossee, Hound Ears Club, or Deer Valley Racquet Club all offer well groomed clay courts as well as indoor hard courts. If you are looking for something spur of the moment, play free on either the High School or college outdoor tennis courts.
The Boone area is rated one of the nation’s top places to relax and unwind at one of our many resorts. The High Country has three main destination spa’s which are Westglow, the Spa at Crestwood, and the Spa at Chetola.
